METROPOLIS DESIGN-A-T-SHIRT CONTEST Celebration!

We at METROPOLIS VINTAGE are happy to report that our first DESIGN-A-T-SHIRT contest was a resounding success. The quality, ideas, and creativity were all incredible and it was quite a struggle since every one of the submissions was cool in its own way. Our staff finally agreed on a favorite and the prize went to local multi-media artist DANIELLA D. DONATELLE, also known as 3D!  Check out some of her work HERE!

The top three honors went to STEVE ELLIS, JACKIE VINSON, and SAMAY DHAWAN for their amazing work. Here’s Jackie with her wonderful design.

Legendary artist and PUNK MAGAZINE founder JOHN HOLMSTROM stopped by to check out the scene and chat about the art world . . .

And finally, the donuts, courtesy of KRISPY KREME!

This contest will be an annual event! Start dreaming up your ideas now. Thanks again to all of this year’s participants, and congratulations Daniella!

Iggy Pop/Punk Magazine Party at Metropolis!

Metropolis opened up our basement for a big party to celebrate the release of the new Iggy Pop solo LP, with a sneak preview of the accompanying all-Iggy issue of Punk Magazine by our long-time pal, artist John Holmstrom.

Selected pages of Punk #22 were on display, various East Village luminaries were in attendance, and the beer and fun were flowing.

We caught famed rock photographers Godlis and Roberta Bayley, and a motley assortment of rockers, artists, cartoonists, DJs and punks. EVGRIEVE swung by to cover the event, we’ve included some photos by Stacie Joy below, but you can check out the entire article HERE. Thanks to everyone for hanging out!

Iggy‘s new LP, “Every Loser” will be out in January and you can pre-order it HERE with a copy of John’s new issue of Punk.

Punk artist John Holmstrom hangs with our new Metropolis Vintage signage

Of the many visitors that stop by Metropolis during a hectic week, we’re especially glad to see our friend, artist John Holmstrom. Famed for founding Punk Magazine, illustrating Ramones album covers, and much, much more – including the Metropolis Vintage logo. Here he is with the new, updated sign we’ve just added for the front of the store.  Come in and check it out for yourself!

NEW YORK MAGAZINE says METROPOLIS is The Best Vintage For Women In New York!

METROPOLIS VINTAGE makes it into print once again, listed in The Best Vintage For Women In New York! METROPOLIS VINTAGE Best Of New Yorker Magazine

Metropolis is known for selling the city’s most robust selection of vintage T-shirts and, as such, has seen visits from Kanye West, Chloë Sevigny, members of the Strokes, and Iggy Pop; recently, A$AP Rocky wore a bootleg Gucci T-shirt from the store in the “Arya” music video. Carly Mark, owner of the clothing line Puppets and Puppets, confirms the shop’s reputation. She started frequenting Metropolis in 2006 and says she has bought “countless” tees from its “big unpretentious collection” for between $50 and $100 (though rare items, like a 1990 Grace Jones shirt, can cost up to $2,450). Mark’s favorite purchase so far is a tee featuring a naked woman with breasts that look like “twin demons making out.” If you’re looking for something not satanic, Metropolis stocks an improbably niche inventory that’s organized with encyclopedic precision. “There’s a Marvel category, an alien category, and a Bugs Bunny category,” Mark says. “Every band has its own spot on the rack. If you walked in and were like, ‘I want a Space Jam T-shirt,’ they’d take you to the Space Jam section.”
