Stay as dry as British Royalty with one of our BARBOUR JACKETS!

BARBOURJACKETSMETROPOLISVINTAGE

Originally founded back in 1894 as an oil cloth import service, the company J. Barbour & Sons was famously known for their waterproof waxed-cotton jackets.  Due to the infamously soggy British climate, these jackets became a staple of British life and soon spread in popularity across the world.  Today, many similar waxed-cotton jackets are referred to as “Barbour Jackets”, whether made by Barbour or not!  Lady Diana was often seen sporting a Barbour throughout the 1980’s when she could certainly have had anything she wanted to wear.  We have quite a few currently in store, so stop by and pick one up.  If it’s good enough to keep British Royalty dry, it’s probably good enough for you, too!

A tale of TUXEDO TAILCOATS at Metropolis Vintage!

fred-astaire

What could be more dapper than a tuxedo coat with tails? Also known as a “swallow-tail” or “claw hammer“, flip on Turner Classic Movies at any given time and you’re bound to see a dapper gent wearing one. Everyone from Clark Gable to Fred Astaire owned one, the latter immortalized his tailcoat in song during one of his most famous films of 1935.  While the world may not yet be ready for a top hat or monocle resurgence, the tailcoat looks elegant and adds the edge of class you need for that extra special occasion. Unfortunately, they are becoming harder and harder to find these days, but we at METROPOLIS VINTAGE remain eagle-eyed and stalwartly search for the finest in vintage menswear for you. Come on down and catch the tail of a tuxedo tailcoat before they’re all gone!

THE BACHELOR, THE ROCKER and THE VELVET JACKET

velvet jackets

Ah yes, the velvet jacket – destined to go down in history as one of the most tactile textiles known to man. Any self-respecting bachelor of the 1970’s owned one in every shade, in hopes that some nubile bachelorette would find the fine fabric irresistible to the touch. Paired with a scarf, a velvet jacket forms the cornerstone of the classic shaggy-haired-rock-dandy look. Mick Jagger himself will tell you that they go quite well with a bottle of red wine – in which case you may opt for a darker burgundy shade in case of spillage. The popularity of this garment continues throughout the ages, so naturally we’ve got some in stock for you here at METROPOLIS VINTAGE. Come on down and feel one for yourself!
