East Coast Connection Vol.2

East Coast Connection is a collective comprised of @futurepastnyc, @freshkillsvintage, and @metropolisnycvintage. The goal of East Coast Connection is to bring people together in the vintage world, hearing their stories, and building connections that go beyond just business. East Coast Connection Vol. 2 went down on May 30th live from Metropolis. Some of the best vintage t-shirt dealers from all over the country came together under one roof for an amazing experience we like to refer as “The New York t-shirt exchange.” It’s where instagram meets real life. Where new connections and friendships are made that creates an experience like no other when it comes to vintage clothing in New York City. East Coast Connection Vol. 2 featured 15 vendors from all over the country for a one day event. Vendors brought out their best shirts for everyone to see. Some of the best t-shirts or “grails” you only see online or in pictures were on display during East Coast Connection Vol. 2. Buying, selling, and trading went down throughout the event and many left with a smile on their face. This was one to remember and just one of many East Coast Connection installments. We would like to thank everyone who took part in this and made ECC Vol.2 an amazing event. See you at ECC Vol. 3!!!

Mosquitohead Interview

“The Legend of Mosquitohead”

Richard Colligan (Owner/Founder) of Metropolis Vintage and the East Coast Connection (@freshkillsvintage/@futurepastnyc) come together to bring to you the Mosquitohead interview live from Metropolis Vintage in New York City. They are joined by special guests Robert Brandt (founder of Mosquitohead) and Richard Allen (original Mosquitohead employee.)

Throughout the interview founder Robert Brandt gives the history behind Mosquitohead, from its conception, its success, and gives insight behind the journey of Mosquitohead. Along with Richard Allen they also discuss the design process and what went into the curation of some of the incredible pieces released by the brand.

To give a brief overview, Mosquitohead was a clothing brand established in 1986 in Los Angeles by Robert Brandt and his business partner Paul. At the time Robert and Paul noticed a huge gap in the market for rock merchandise and counter culture shirts. They noticed a lack of design concept and in the words of founder Robert Brandt  “No culture behind what was being made.” This led to the very beginnings of Mosquitohead. The brand is best known for their counter culture aesthetic, and incredible design with their all over bleach prints. Today they are some of the most, if not the most sought after collectable t-shirts in the vintage community. They were one of the first collectible t-shirts to break the $1,000 barrier and till this day there is an allure and mystery behind these t-shirts. Watch this amazing interview to get an in-depth look behind the story of the “Legend of Mosquitohead.”

“T-shirts don’t just come from the air. Behind every great t-shirt is a person/ideas/company/ and designers. The reason Mosquitohead lasted the test of time because it was great art.”

We’ve got PLAID! Vintage Shirts, Coats, PENDLETONS, FILSONS and more . . .

There’s an abundance of PLAID here at Metropolis Vintage these days . . . We have  vintage plaid “Grunge” style shirts as well as heavy wool PENDLETON, FILSON, WOODRICH and JOHNSON coats and jackets.  The heavy wool jackets are a perfect warm and stylish barrier against the winter chill, but did you know that THE BEACH BOYS originally called themselves The Pendletones in honor of their favorite brand?  Their legacy has been just as durable as their sturdy jackets, coats and shirts – lasting throughout the century.  Mike Watt, bass player for THE STOOGES, MINUTEMEN, and lifetime plaid flannel expert advises: ”Pendeltons are the prize. Avoid anything made in Sri Lanka.”

“At Pendleton Woolen Mills, Clarence Morton Bishop envisioned a different kind of fabric for a man’s wool shirt. Pendleton’s sophisticated weaving capabilities were producing vibrant Indian trade blankets. Why not bring that same weaving and color know-how to flannel shirting?  After much weaving experimentation and hard work, Pendleton’s innovative Umatilla shirting fabric rolled off the loom. The positive response was immediate. After World War II, the concept of sportswear emerged in American society.  While hunting, fishing, or pursuing his hobbies, Dad very often wore a Pendleton shirt.  Throughout the 20th century, clothing trends have emerged from workwear and traveled into the fashion mainstream. Casual and colorful, leisurewear symbolized the end of privation and the return of the good life.”
